WELCOME TO ROSS!

We are excited that you are considering Ross for your business education. In addition to offering a cutting-edge academic program, Ross also offers a community of students, faculty, staff and corporate partners who are committed to diversity in the classroom and in the workplace.

As students, we understand that identifying the school that is right for you can be a difficult process, and we are here to help. The FAQs below address many of the questions that prospective students have asked us in the past. However, we are happy to answer any additional questions you may have. Simply send us an e-mail at outforbusiness@umich.edu.

The University of Michigan established one of the first offices of LGBT Affairs in the country in 1971. Visit their website for Frequently Asked Questions about the University of Michigan.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ROSS

Can I speak with a current student about his or her experience at Ross?
Certainly! Out For Business members are happy to talk with prospective students by phone or e-mail. We are also happy to meet with you in person when you visit campus. To get connected with a current Out For Business member, simply send an e-mail to ofb@umich.edu.

Should I be out in my application?
Choosing whether or not to be out in your application is a personal decision. Some of our members were out during the application process and others were not. Sound advice for all applicants: remember to focus on the main ideas that you are trying to convey (leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, career focus, etc.). Orientation alone will not get you admitted, but if you are comfortable doing so, connecting it to your relevant experiences and qualifications may be one way to personalize your application.

Should I be out during recruiting?
Choosing whether or not to be out is personal decision based on a number of factors, including your comfort with being out in the workplace, the field that you hope to enter, the geographic location in which you wish to live, etc. Some members of Out For Business were out in the workplace before school, and other have decided to be out now. Out For Business does have an active corporate relations program, and we are in touch with a number of major corporations (Huron Consulting Group, Kraft, General Motors, PG&E, etc.) that are actively seeking to increase the diversity of their workforces by recruiting LGBT graduates.

What opportunities are there to meet other LGBT people in Ann Arbor?
Out For Business sponsors social events to connect LGBT business students with each other and with students at the University of Michigan's other graduate and professional schools. In addition, there are several LGBT or LGBT-friendly establishments in town, including the Aut Bar and Necto.
